I have the honour to refer to paragraph 6 of

my despatch No.492 of 19th August, 1936, and to inform you that

I have after full consideration reached the conclusion that the

6 rebuilding of the Central Market should properly involve the

permanent removal from that site of the wholesale stalls to another locality leaving the new Central Market, when rebuilt,

to accommodate the retail stalls only.

2.

The Central Market, which is the largest and, on account of its situation, the most popular in the Colony,

has long been the subject of adverse criticism; and it cannot be denied that the present building, erected in 1895, falls far short of modern standards, and that it is, moreover, considerably overcrowded. To enlarge the site by the resumption of adjoining lots would entail an expense in present circumstances prohibitive, and the only remedy for the present congestion lies in the transference of the wholesale business to a less congested area of the City. After careful consideration a site has been chosen on the Kennedy Town Reclamation immediately to the west of Cadogan Street, in a district little devoted to residential purposes and within easy reach of the waterfront and of the

main public abattoir. Some opposition on the part of the wholesale firms may be expected and is in such cases almost THE RIGHT HONOURABLE
